The "Dias de Deus Prize" for outstanding Master thesis was awarded to João Sieiro dos Santos, a current PhD student at GRIT/CENTRA. The prize recognizes João's work on his master's thesis on “Radiation reaction in magnetized black holes,” where he solved a classical problem in electromagnetism in curved spacetime, and addressed puzzles in the literature. The thesis was supervised by Vítor Cardoso and José Natário.
The award ceremony took place on October 15th, and included the President of IST, of the Scientific Council and of the student association. The ceremony also included a hommage to Professor Jorge Dias de Deus (1941-2021), a historic figure in the Department of Physics, having founded CENTRA in 1994 and being an extraordinary science communicator. In his honor, the student association created this prize in 2023.
