Bondi-like gauges at Tubingen

Mar. 26, 2021

Gravitational waves offer a window into the nature of black holes, neutron starts and other compact objects, as well as beyond the Standard Model physics. To maximize the discovery potential by their observation, the experimental progress has to be matched to high accuracy waveform modelling. The latter is based to a big extent on Numerical Relativity. Bondi-like gauges provide a formulation that reaches future null infinity and underpin codes that aim to produce high fidelity waveforms.

Thanasis Giannakopoulos and his collaborators recently discovered a pathological structure in the Bondi-like PDE systems numerically solved, that can affect the accuracy of the modeled waveforms. In a group seminar to Tubingen, Thanasis explained the problem and highlighted the need for a new alternative formulation that overcomes the issue.
