Acoustic black holes

Feb. 03, 2017

Sofia Freitas successfully defended her work on acoustic black holes, in front of Departmental panel. It has been shown that sound waves in a moving fluid behave as scalar waves in curved spacetime. This correspondence between allows, for instance, to design experiments that reproduce some aspects of black holes. This is very exciting, as it means we are able to study these astrophysical bodies in a controlled environment. See the following video for an explanarion.
