LIGO sees gravitational waves for a second time

Jun. 16, 2016

LIGO has just released news of a second black hole binary coalescing in the universe. This binary is lighter than the first, with a total mass of around 22 solar masses, and it merged 1.4 billion years ago. This discovery shows that LIGO really works, that black holes really exist in binaries and that gravitational-wave astronomy is born!

The news was extensively covered in the media, and in Scientific American or La Repubblica, work by CENTRA members was also mentioned, where it was shown that this type of signal can possibly (but highly not likely) have come from other compact, but more exotic objects like wormholes or gravastars.
