Instabilities of black objects

The Kerr-Newman family of four-dimensional, asymptotically flat black holes is stable. However, two decades a number of instabilities have been found which afflict higher-dimensional black objects. I will briefly review some of these, focusing on a recently-uncovered instability, affecting charged black holes in de Sitter backgrounds.
