Schwarzschild precession in a star orbiting a supermassive black hole

Apr. 16, 2020

CENTRA researchers António Amorim, Paulo Garcia and Vítor Cardoso participated in the first measurement of the Schwarzschild precession around a supermassive black hole. This was achieved with the GRAVITY instrument at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), and sets an unprecedented test of General Relativity.

The scientific paper detailing the measurement: https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2020/04/aa37813-20/aa37813-20.html

ESO press release (with translations in all ESO member states languages): https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso2006/

An opinion article (in Portuguese) on the theme: https://www.publico.pt/2020/04/18/ciencia/opiniao/homem-queria-saber-deus-pensa-1912695

The home universities/faculties of the involved researchers (FCUL, IST, UPorto) also published news (in Portuguese).

This result gathered quite some attention by the media. We present below some selection of articles that referred to the Portuguese team:
