The young and the restless stars in the time domain

Mar. 21 - 14:30 - 2019

Speaker: Lynne Hillenbrand (Caltech)

Title: The young and the restless stars in the time domain

Abstract: Recent and ongoing star formation within about a kiloparsec of the Sun has produced tens of thousands of stars younger than a few million years of age. They are enigmatically variable sources - across the electromagnetic spectrum. Driving mechanisms include processes occurring in the inner circumstellar disk, in the disk-to-star accretion zone or magnetospheric region, and perhaps in the outflow regions and outer disk. The talk will give an overview of the relevant phenomena and present several types of state-of-the-art multiwavelength time domain data sets, along with their bounty of beautiful lightcurves, and physical interpretation.
