Title: Strong gravity and fundamental physics: from no hair theorems to hairy black holes

Abstract: I will give an overview of some the opportunities and challenges of testing fundamental physics with gravitational wave observations. I will then focus on black holes and discuss how no-hair theorems help us select the right paths to new black hole physics that might be seen in gravitational wave observations.
