Title: The cycle of matter in the magnetized interstellar medium as revealed by machine vision
Abstract:
Machine vision (MV) is the general name given to the methods for automatic inspection and analysis of images, from pattern recognition to object classification. I will present the results of MV techniques applied to the study of the formation and evolution of star-forming clouds in the Milky Way, both in observations and numerical simulations. First, the characterization of filamentary structures in the observations of the atomic hydrogen (HI) emission at 21 cm in The HI/OH/Recombination-line (THOR) survey of the Galactic plane. Second, the evaluation of the correlation between the HI emission and the emission from molecular species in star-forming clouds. Finally, in the study of the anisotropy introduced by the interstellar magnetic fields in the velocity field in and around star-forming clouds.
