3-year Research Fellowships

Jan. 11, 2011

General information to candidates Candidates should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, physics or a closely related field. Under the Welcome II program, all candidates must be nationals of a EU Member State or FP7 Associated Country and have carried out research in non-EU countries for the last 3 years (researchers that have spent the last 9 months in Europe after the 3 year period can also apply). Gross salary will be approximately between 41000EUR and 46200EUR per year depending on experience, plus social security benefits. An initial travel/relocation allowance of 1600EUR will be provided as well as a minimum of 5000EUR per year for research expenses. The tentative date for the appointment is in the fall of 2011, to be agreed upon with the successful candidate. http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/contratacaodoutorados/welcome2 (Welcome II program) Welcome II Program is administered by FCT, being co-funded under the the Marie Curie Action COFUND <http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/mariecurie/cofund>, a part of the 7th European Union Research Framework Programme.

RESEARCH POSITION IN COSMOLOGY

CENTRA wishes to strengthen its activities in the field of Type Ia Supernovae and preference will be given to candidates with experience in the fields of supernovae, cosmology with supernovae, and galaxy formation and evolution, but researchers in other fields of Astrophysics and Cosmology are also welcome to apply. Experience in observations and data reduction, including integral field spectroscopy, will be a benefit. The successful candidate will actively contribute to CENTRA's involvement in  supernovae studies, supernova host galaxies and implications in Cosmology. Interested researchers should contact Dr. Ana Mourão (amourao@ist.utl.pt) or Dr. Vallery Stanishev (vallery.stanishev@ist.utl.pt) before March 1st 2011. They are expected to provide a CV and 3 letters of recommendation. The pre-selected candidate(s) will get the CENTRA's support to apply to the Welcome II program (deadline March 14th). More information: http://centra.ist.utl.pt <http://centra.ist.utl.pt/> http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/contratacaodoutorados/welcome2 (Welcome II program) Welcome II Program is administered by FCT, being co-funded under the the Marie Curie Action COFUND <http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/mariecurie/cofund>, a part of the 7th European Union Research Framework Programme.

RESEARCH POSITION IN STRING COSMOLOGY

Research in string cosmology at Centra focuses within an interesting range of directions and from strong ties with groups in other institutions (see, e.g., http://www.dfis.ubi.pt/~pmoniz). The applicant is expected to contribute to the efforts of the CENTRA researchers at UBI and to the training of students. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of research interests (with an exciting (!) research proposal) and three letters of recommendation to the following e-mail address: pmoniz[AT]ubi.pt Please use the subject "Welcome II -- String Cosmology ". Applications should be received by Feb 20, 2011. Incomplete applications shall not be considered. Screening of applicants will begin on March 1, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled. For more information please contact Paulo Moniz (pmoniz[AT]ubi.pt). These positions are supported by Fundação para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (FCT).

RESEARCH POSITION IN ASTROPHYSICS Candidates should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, physics or a closely related field, preferably with experience in 21cm studies of the Epoch of Reionization and the Dark Ages. Researchers in other fields of Cosmology are also welcomed to apply. Expertise in radio-interferometry techniques and algorithms for data processing will be an added benefit. The successful candidate will actively contribute to CENTRA’s involvement in the Path2SKA@PT program (http://path2ska.org) aimed at the development and scientific exploitation of future radio telescopes such as ASKAP, MeerKAT, Westerbork-Apertif and the SKA. Extensive interaction with other international groups is expected and an adequate travel allowance will be available. Interested researchers should contact Dr. Mário Santos (mgrsantos@ist.utl.pt) as soon as possible and before March 1st 2011 to explore the application procedure. RESEARCH POSITION IN GENERAL RELATIVITY AND RELATIVISTIC ASTROPHYSICS (including gravitational waves, black hole physics and numerical relativity)

The gravity group is currently focusing on phenomenology of black hole physics and numerical relativity, and is composed of Vitor Cardoso and Jose' P. S. Lemos, several postdocs and PhD students. The group has strong ties with gravity groups in other institutions, such as the Universities of Rome, Aveiro, Barcelona, Sao Paulo, and Mississippi. The applicant is expected to contribute to the efforts of the group and to the training of students.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of research interests (with an exciting research proposal) and three letters of recommendation to the following e-mail address:
