ABSTRACT: Violations of Lorentz symmetry have come up as a physical possibility in many searches for a theory that unifies general relativity and the standard model of particle physics. Testing Lorentz symmetry can thus be viewed as an experimental handle on quantum gravity. We investigate possible consequences of Lorentz-symmetry breaking in particle physics, using a general effective field theory approach. The potential experimental signals that follow from this can be used to bound parameters of Lorentz violation and ultimately theories of quantum gravity.
