Black holes in a box

The Anti-de Sitter / Conformal Filed Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence has established a remarkable analogy between black-hole physics in asymptotically AdS spacetimes and conformal field theories on the boundaries. The dynamics of black-hole spacetimes thus play an important role in the context of high-energy physics. So far, hardly anything is known about highly dynamic, non-linear black hole physics in such backgrounds. We describe the first steps towards numerical simulations of black hole configurations in asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This scenario is mimicked by enclosing black hole binaries in a box with reflecting boundaries. We discuss numerical results addressing this issue and the physical mechanisms governing this system.
