In this talk I will try to argue that a convenient way to analyze instabilities of black holes in AdS space is via the Bragg-Williams construction of a free energy like function. Starting with a pedagogical review of this construction in condensed matter systems, and also its implementation to study Hawking-Page transition, I will discuss the
instabilities associated with R-charged black holes.
